Does your pet have recurring ear problems?
Symptoms requiring an urgent veterinary visit include any of the following: ears that are red, very itchy, painful when the ear or the side of the face is touched and/or massaged, have a nasty odor, a yellow and/or sticky discharge, and in some severe cases, a head tilt or reluctance to eat. If your pet has any of these symptoms, please call us for an appointment right away!
On the other hand, if your pet falls into the ‘once in a while there’s a mild flare-up’ category, and the ears are not bothering your pet (see above list of urgent symptoms), try our over the counter Zymox Otic ear drops. They do not have any drugs in them, are soothing, and work by enzymes which encourage your pets ears to return to more normal by gently removing extra ear wax and other discharges as well as killing bacteria and yeast. These drops can help many pets with mild or very early ear infections. Do not use any ear cleaner while using Zymox Otic ear drops.
Dogs with recurring yeast ear infections can benefit from weekly ear cleanings with Zymox Ear cleanser. It helps keep yeast infections under control; if you notice you are always finding your dogs’ ears are dirty, even when you’ve been cleaning them, please call us for an appointment. Your dog probably needs professional care and prescription medication.
If you don’t have a maintenance ear program of cleaning and/or regular prescription medication for your pet’s ears, and ear infections keep recurring, please ask us about our doctor’s specific recommendations for you and your pet.
