Cat pheromones? Really?
Pheromones are behavior scents, and Feliway is the best. It works to help diffuse stress in lots of situations (getting accustomed to a new home, having a new roommate move in, visiting dog, car trips, going into the carrier, etc. It also helps decrease inter-cat issues like spraying, urine marking, and cats that don’t get along. There are no drugs in this product, and it only affects cats, so it is pretty safe to use in your home.
Feliway comes in plug-in diffusers that last 30 days and can be refilled (this form is best for a new home, new roommate, or any ongoing problems). The plug-in diffusers will each cover several rooms, and the refills are also good for 30 days. The nice thing about the diffusers is that you just plug them in and make a note to get refills in 30 days! There is nothing else to worry about.
It is also available in a pump spray bottle, which is excellent for situations that are short-term, like the cat carrier (put a spray or two into the carrier a few minutes before getting your cat), or stressful visitors (a dog or some rambunctious kids, for example) – spray it in a room, put the cats in the room, and shut the door on their new sanctuary. For upsetting car trips, a spritz into the carrier will help, but if the trip is going to be longer than a few minutes, also spray a familiar, used piece of cloth that has the cat’s own scent on it like a t-shirt that you let them sleep on, and add that to the carrier. Renew the spray every 30 to 60 minutes by removing the cloth, folding it over, and re-spraying it, then put it back into the carrier.
