For those who have not lived through this before, the 17-year cicadas are going to be making an appearance here in the next few weeks. They will hatch out in the billions. They will be everywhere and they get into everything; you will step on them on sidewalks, and pull them out of your hair.

Drug Shortages

Due to recent and more frequent drug shortages (currently, of Deramaxx, prednisone tablets, and all sizes of thyroid medications for dogs), we have changed our prescription refill policy for all prescription medications except for Heartgard.

Proposed compounding legislation could affect your pet!

Proposed legislation currently in the Senate addresses compounded medications. While aimed at human medications and human usage, our furry patients (and their owners) are going to get tangled in this law if it is passed, because pharmacy laws do not distinguish between human and veterinary prescriptions. Why is this a big deal?

We just received a limited supply of Deramaxx (chewable anti-inflammatory and pain medication for dogs); it has been unavailable for more than a year...  If you have used Deramaxx in the past and your dog did well on it, please let us know and we can get your dog re-started on Deramaxx.

Early spring allergies?

In the last 4-5 weeks, we have seen dozens of dogs and cats who have had mild to severe flare-ups of spring allergies, really early in the year. It may be due to the couple of warm days we had in early January, but whatever the reason, lots of individuals are suffering at an abnormal time of year.

He got too warm basking in the dog bed in front of the fire, so he shifted around to get cooler and more comfortable. He stayed in this position, sound asleep, for almost an hour!

Hiking in the afternoon on the Elakala trail, West Virginia. This is just a few hours and a few miles away from the morning's hike in ice and snow (and the previous blog entry). It was just as fun!

It was COLD but lots of good smells and we hiked for a mile or so with no problems this morning. We were nice and warm in our winter coats (as long as we kept moving)!

On top of Cabin Mountain

The top of the mountain was covered in hoarfrost - really cool stuff that forms when it is cold, snowing, and windy. It was VERY cold and pretty but we did not hike very far today because the snow was very deep (like 2 or more feet deep in places). We went to look and plowed through the snow - Dad almost got stuck when he went into a hole and the snow was up to his thigh!
