We cater to you and your pets!
Do you have questions or concerns? Come to our small, friendly hospital where we’ll quickly learn your pet’s habits, history, and needs. Would you like to learn more about litter box use, behavior issues, dog training, or anything else pet-related? We’ll help! Does your pet have special needs? We are happy to customize how your pet is handled here to make visits less stressful.
We’ll see you quickly.
Your wait to see the doctor is rarely more than 5 minutes total. Your pet will get the doctor's head-to-toe exam, and you'll get her recommendations verbally and in writing. Our wellness plans include twice yearly checkups, regular lab tests, and only the vaccinations your pet needs. See www.NPWM.com for details on why checkups every 6 months are ideal! We use FDA approved, safe, gentle, 3-year vaccines where available. We recommend Bordatella vaccines yearly for dogs; some dogs should get Canine Influenza and/or Leptospirosis vaccines.
Same-day sick visits available every weekday
Our in-house lab helps us diagnose sick patients quickly; we can often get results within minutes. X-ray and treatment facilities are here if your pet needs them. Our pharmacy carries regular medications and our compounding pharmacy can make special meds for your pet.
This is a small, friendly family practice
Dr. Candy Olson will learn all about your pet. Dave Olson orders supplies, pays the bills, handles payroll and taxes and is our IT and fix-it guy. He occasionally fills in for staff, too! Our daughter Rachel has worked as a veterinary assistant for years and also does inventory, our recycling, and lots more. Martha, our terrific groomer, has been with us for more than 15 years; our other staff members are warm, helpful, caring, and knowledgeable.
Dr. Olson has 30+ years of experience with dogs, cats, and veterinary medicine.
So don’t hesitate to ask any questions you may have! Due to the fast pace of changes and advances in veterinary medicine, she does her very best to keep up to date, completing more than 80 hours of continuing education each year (Virginia requires 15). Her hobbies include gardening, photography, Master Naturalist certification, and reading on her Kindle. Our dachshund is definitely a pampered princess (see Madison’s Diary). Molly (our other beloved dachshund) lived to be 17 but we lost her on February 28, 2011. She is missed!
Our Anesthesia and Surgery
Your pet will have the safest possible anesthesia here, with pre-surgical blood tests done on all patients, IV fluids during the procedure, isoflurane gas anesthesia, constant hands-on checking of your pet’s well-being by our experienced staff and our anesthesia monitors, and more. Our Radiosurgery machine is similar to laser but has fewer hazards. All pets are given pain medications before, during, and after surgery. Pre-anesthetic blood tests are required, and are usually scheduled in advance.
Grooming/bathing for cats and dogs
Our groomer is gentle and very experienced, especially with youngsters, the elderly, and pets with special needs. She is accepting cats and small to medium-sized dogs as new grooming patients. Our staff does regular baths and nail trims, too. Call for an appointment or for details.
Pet Behavior
Need help with your dog's behavior? Dr. Olson will provide tips and suggestions and can help you improve your dog’s manners. We recommend local dog trainers Jill Dulaney and Janet McMillan (see Contacts), and can also refer you to a behaviorist or a Veterinary Behavior Specialist.
Do you wish your cats got along better, or used the litter box more religiously? We can help! Talk to Dr. Olson, check out our ‘Litter’ Video and read our ‘Litter Box Tips’ handout. Once you make the recommended changes, there can be an amazing difference in your cat!
